Why I Do This Work

I believe in a world where people realise they can do more than they imagine.

I’ve seen it happen over and over: A leader steps into a role they weren’t sure they were ready for. A team member discovers their voice matters. Suddenly, what seemed out of reach becomes possible.

Early in my career, leaders gave me opportunities I hadn’t done before; roles that stretched me beyond what I’d proven. I figured it out, but it took longer than it needed to because I didn’t always know what support to ask for.

Over 15+ years inside a tech scale-up, I learned that when people have both the opportunity to step into what’s next AND the partnership to get there, they grow faster, lead better, and deliver more.

That’s why I do this work.

How I Know This Works

Earlier in my career, I promoted a talented engineer into her first leadership role. She wasn’t sure she was ready, but I saw what she was capable of.

I didn’t just give her the role. I walked with her through it: creating safe spaces to practice, helping her realise her voice mattered, building her confidence.

Six months later, she’d developed one of her direct reports to senior level and employee engagement was through the roof. She couldn’t believe how much she’d accomplished in such a short time.

When one leader realises what’s possible, their entire team shifts.


My Leadership Philosophy

Belief

Believing in people before they believe in themselves. This starts with you: trusting your own capability as a leader. Then it extends to your team: seeing their potential and backing that belief with opportunity and support. When you believe in yourself and your people, everyone achieves more than they thought possible.

Humanity

People-first, always. This starts with you as a leader. How you’re doing matters. It extends to your team: building trust and making sure voices are heard. You can’t scale sustainably without caring for people as they care for the business.

Together

Scaling requires partnership at every level: you with trusted advisors, you with your team, your team with each other. I partner with you to create that collaborative culture, where no one has to figure it out alone.

Every engagement blends these three. Scaling well demands all three.

I’ve been where you are. 14+ years building teams, functions, and supporting transformation inside a tech scale-up – from startup chaos to 250+ people to acquisition. Not from a book. From doing it.

I bring calm to chaos. Leaders tell me: “After talking with Shirley, I can finally think clearly.” That calm creates the space you need to step back, refocus, and lead with confidence.

I work from pattern recognition, not playbooks. I’ve built from scratch at different stages, in different contexts. I know what’s needed at 30 people vs 80 people vs 150 people – because I’ve done it.

I spot readiness before it’s obvious. I see the signals that someone’s ready for more, often before they know it themselves. Then I give them the opportunity and walk with them until they own it.

You don’t need another expert with a framework. You need someone who’s been in the chaos, knows what actually works, and helps you discover you’re capable of more than you imagined.

15+ years scaling teams, products, and people in high-growth tech environments:

Built teams and functions from scratch, repeatedly

My manager unexpectedly left early in my career. Suddenly I was alone with one contractor to train. I stepped up:

  • Built an operations team from 1 to 6 people
  • Recruited and managed a network of 20-22 freelancers
  • Created onboarding processes, training materials, and QA systems that brought consistency.
  • Reduced turnover from 54% to 13% – not through perks, but through clarity, trust, and leadership that protects what matters.

Later, I built a customer onboarding function from zero: hired programme managers, designed end-to-end processes, established quality frameworks that scaled with the business.

Turned around a struggling team and scaled it sustainably

Inherited 6 people at breaking point. Everything depending on 2-3 burning out. Within a year: grew to 8 with the right people in place. After two years: grew to 15. By year three: emerging leaders were driving cross-functional influence and shaping decisions across departments. Weight lifted, culture rebuilt, momentum sustained.

Led transformation when change outpaces process

I’ve navigated AI implementation, rapid growth, and organisational shifts – helping teams cut through uncertainty, adopt new ways of working, and deliver real results.

Developed leaders before they knew they were ready

Coached emerging leaders into roles the business desperately needed—often while they were still figuring out if they could do it. Then walked with them until they got there.

I’ve worked across engineering, operations, AI, and organizational development. I know how to align business needs with how people actually work.
